Jailbreak Your Xbox 360 in 2025: A Homebrew Guide
Want to run homebrew apps on your Xbox 360 without special hardware? This guide shows you how to use the FreeMyXe exploit to unlock your console. You don't need an RGH or JTAG mod. This method lets you run homebrew on a regular Xbox 360.
Warning: This guide is only for running homebrew. It is not for piracy. Doing this wrong could damage your Xbox 360. Back up your system first! You might not be able to use Xbox Live after this. This is not for Xbox Series X/S.
What You Need
- An Xbox 360
- The game Tony Hawk's American Wasteland
- A USB drive formatted to FAT32
- A computer to transfer files
Getting Started
- Check Your Dashboard: Make sure your Xbox 360 is on dashboard version 17559. Go to Settings > System > Console Settings > System Info. Your dashboard version is listed there.
- Update if Needed: If you need to update, get the update from xbox.com. Put the "$SystemUpdate" folder on a FAT32 USB drive. Plug the USB into your Xbox 360 and follow the update prompts.
Download the Necessary Files
You'll need a few files to make this work.
- Xbox 360 USB Files: This includes the files needed for the Tony Hawk's American Wasteland exploit.
- Tools.zip: This contains the XE X Patcher, which you'll use to patch homebrew applications so they can run.
- FreeMyXe: Download the latest version of FreeMyXe.
- Homebrew Apps: Get any homebrew apps you want to use, like XEX Menu or Aurora. XEX Menu is highly recommended.
Preparing Your USB Drive
- Format the USB Drive: Your USB drive must be formatted to FAT32. You can format it on your Xbox 360 in the storage settings.
- Copy Tony Hawk Files: Open the "Xbox360BadUpdateRetail" zip file. Go to the "Tony Hawk's American Wasteland" folder. Copy the files to the root of your USB drive. Don't put them in any folders.
- Install XEX Menu: Open the XEX Menu zip file.
- Go to the "content" folder.
- If you don't see the content folder you may need to view hidden items in your file explorer.
- Go to the "0000000000000000" folder.
- Copy the "C0DE9999" folder into this location.
- Add FreeMyXe: Copy "FreeMyXe.xex" to the "bad_update_payload" folder on the USB drive. Delete the existing "default.xex" file. Rename "FreeMyXe.xex" to "default.xex".
- Install Homebrew Apps: Copy any other homebrew apps to the root of the USB drive. For Aurora, create a folder named "Aurora" on the USB drive. Extract all the Aurora files into that folder.
Patching Homebrew Apps
Most homebrew apps need to be patched to work with FreeMyXe.
Extract XE X Patcher: Extract the "XE X Patcher" from the "tools.zip" file to your desktop.
Open PowerShell: Open the XE X Patcher folder. Right-click in the folder and select "Open in Terminal".
Patch the Apps: Type the following command in the PowerShell window:
.\xextool.exe -mr "[file path to your .xex file]"Replace "[file path to your .xex file]" with the actual file path to the app you want to patch. For example:
.\xextool.exe -mr "F:\Aurora\Aurora.xex"Do this for each homebrew app you want to use.
Important: The xextool.exe filename might be different. Use the actual name of the program.
Now you should be able to load the homebrew apps.
