PS5 Buying Guide: Find a Console for Jailbreaking (2025)

Want to buy a PlayStation 5 (PS5) that you can jailbreak? It's important to know what to look for before you buy. This guide will help you find a PS5 with the right software, so you can try jailbreaking.

Important: As of right now, there is NO working jailbreak for PS5s with software version 7.61 or higher.

Know Your PS5 Software

The PS5's software is called firmware. To jailbreak a PS5, you need one with older firmware. Here's what you need to know:

  • PS5 7.61: No jailbreak available.
  • PS5 8.00: No jailbreak available.
  • PS5 6.50: No jailbreak available.
  • PS5 4.03: This might work, but it needs special hardware.
  • PS5 6.00: No jailbreak available.

Warning: If someone is selling a PS5 with firmware 7.61 or 8.00 and claims it can be jailbroken, it's a scam.

How to Check Your PS5 Firmware

If you already have a PS5, you can check the firmware version:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Go to System.
  3. Go to System Software.
  4. Go to Console Information.

The firmware version is the number after the first dash. For example, if it says "7.61," that's your firmware version.

Jailbreaking Methods

There are different ways to try to jailbreak a PS5.

  • Blu-ray Disc: This requires a Blu-ray burner and a blank disc.
  • Specific Japanese Games: Some games use an engine called Artemis. These games might work, but they can be hard to find and expensive. You also need a disc drive.
  • Web Browser: This is the easiest way, but it only works on firmware 5.50 or lower.

Important: If your PS5 has firmware 6.00 to 7.61, you need a disc drive to use the Blu-ray or game methods.

What PS5 Should You Buy?

Here's what to look for when buying a PS5 for jailbreaking:

  • PS5 Slim: It's best to avoid the Slim model. It's hard to find one with firmware 5.50 or lower that can use the web browser method. Some early Slim models with disc drives might not work without updating the software.
  • PS5 (Original): Look for a console made before September 2022 if you want to use the web browser method (firmware 5.50 or lower). For firmware 7.61 or lower, look for one made before September 2023.

Checking the Model Number

The model number can help you find a PS5 with the right firmware. You can find it on the PS5 box. It starts with "CFI" and then has a five-digit number.

  • CFI-10: These are guaranteed to have firmware lower than 7.61, and even lower than 5.50.
  • CFI-11: These should have firmware lower than 7.61, but might not be lower than 5.50. (Example: CFI1115A or CFI1116).
  • CFI-12: Do not buy these. They probably have firmware 8.00 or higher, which is not jailbreakable.

Bundles

Bundles are when a game and console are sold together. These can be a good way to find a PS5 with older firmware. The PS5 developer wiki may have information on what firmware different bundles shipped with. Make sure the end firmware is 7.61 or lower.

Warning: Sometimes, stores will sell a standard console and game separately, even if it looks like a bundle. Check the description carefully to make sure you're getting an official bundle.

Checking the Serial Number

You can also check the serial number on the box. The serial number can tell you when the console was made. This can help you figure out what firmware it has.

  • US Serial Numbers: Look at the bottom barcode. The serial number starts with "AJ" and then has a bunch of numbers. Compare the first numbers to lists online (like on the PS5 developer wiki) to see what firmware it likely has.
  • European Serial Numbers: The serial number you want is in the middle. It looks like "S01-F[numbers]". Again, compare the serial number to lists online to see what firmware it likely has.

How to Read European Serial Numbers

European serial numbers can tell you the year and month the console was made.

  1. Find the serial number: "S01-F[number][year][month][other numbers]".
  2. The "year" is the year it was made:
    • 0 = 2020
    • 1 = 2021
    • 2 = 2022
    • 3 = 2023
  3. The "month" is the month it was made:
    • 1 = January
    • 2 = February
    • 3 = March
    • ...
    • 9 = September
    • A = October
    • B = November
    • C =
